This armadillo plate formed part of the animal's formidable armoured plating. The giant armadillo in question was a, now extinct, relative of the modern armadillo known as the Glyptodon.

Armadillos are part of a group of mammals called Xenarthra along with anteaters and sloths. Numerous types of giant armadillo once roamed South America.

This plate is a fascinating reminder of a truly bizzare time in the history of the Americas.
