The name ammonite comes from what the greek pliny the elder ammonis cornua or horn of amun. Ammonites are a close relative of the squid, octopi and cuttle fish family and were alive from 409 millions years ago until going extinct in the cretaceous-paleogene extinction event, 66 million years ago.

Red flash ammonites are so called for the way they have fossilized causing a colourful iridesent sheen on the outer parts of the fossil.
