Smokey Quartz Rutilated (Angel Hair)

Brown opaque crystal with golden needle inclusions.

Quartz is made of one part silicon and two parts oxygen. It is a silicon dioxide (SiO2) crystal. It is the most abundant mineral found at Earth's surface. The smokey colour comes from free silicon formed from the silicon dioxide by natural irradiation.

The Rutiles inside a Rutilated quartz can be Titanium dioxide, often with iron, but occasionally will have some minor niobium or tantalum. Rutile's within quartz can range from mirror-like metallic-looking crystals, to dark reddish sub-metallic crystals, to bright golden-yellow needles.
